It is an outrage that pollution monitoring will not be be done at local schools regarding the Tesco’s application

The Quote below is from a a Defra policy paper “air quality fact sheet part 4” 13th of March 2020

“Short-term exposure to elevated levels of air pollution can cause a range of health effects and is a particular threat to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, very young and those with existing health issues. However, long term exposure affects us all, with long-term exposure to man-made air pollution in the UK known to shorten lifespans.”

Making it vital that Redbridge Council keep their pledge to monitor nitrogen oxide around schools close to the Goodmayes Tesco development.

Councillor Athwal’s about turn on this at the 28th of April cabinet is an outrage putting profits before child health and if you are sympathetic I would be grateful if you could lobby for a change in policy. How can we tell if the cumulative impact of traffic pollution from 1300  new homes will damage child health unless we measure the existing pollution at nearby schools?

The Council is set to install no idling signage at 50 primary schools to promote child health.  The Council accepts the evidence that even a small reduction in pollution caused by anti-idling zones improves child health making it vital that evidence is collected about the bigger threat of pollution of 1300 homes at nearby schools.

Arguably, the Gladman judgment at the Court of Appeal puts a duty on Councils to measure the impact on pollution emissions caused by a proposed development on child health. The substitution by Redbridge Council of precise monitoring of NO2 at schools and instead use general monitoring in the local area may breach this judgment.

A petition calling for NO2 monitoring at local schools is HERE

  1. All the evidence is there but the council will pursue their own agenda whatever. SHAME on them. Air measurement needs to be done at child height not 6ft+.
When I asked what the benefits are to local residence all I got was wishy washy answer about the new development and how it would have a school .......don't quite think the council have any idea about disstruction and problems this development will inevitably bring further down the road.....
