Dear Residents

Stop the Tesco Toxic Towers!

Public Meeting 8pm Monday 9th January 2023 8pm Methodist Church Hall, Percy Road IG3 8UA

We had a hearing at the High Court on the 16th December where the judge found against us. Following a point raised by the Weston barrister, we now have a new hearing in the new year on two of the four grounds we argued the Council acted unlawfully upon.  A judge immediately deciding to rule for a new hearing in front of a new judge is very unusual. The reasons for a new hearing , the submissions and the judge’s order are at a post at stopthetescotoxictowers.blogspot.com dated 22nd December 2022.

The proposed new school is central to our arguments. It should be ideally sited away from the busy high road or at the very least have air pollution filters.

Public campaigning, especially the support of local trade unions and a faith group, meant the Council abandoned their claim of unlimited legal costs if they won in due course. Similarly, if enough organisations and elected representatives come on board, Tesco may step in and agree to either the air filters and/or insist that the school be placed inside the proposed development. Tesco are part funding the school, an air pollution filter system to protect the children will be a tiny expense against the expected sale price of more than £300M if the development is built.

GLA research in a press release dated 3.12.18 states below

“A recent study by University College London and the University of Cambridge, funded by the Mayor, found that indoor air pollution was significantly higher inside classrooms, due to a range of factors including the age of buildings, ventilation, positioning of windows, and wall-to-wall carpeting.

The findings suggested that the protection offered by the building increased the further away it was from the busiest roads and that airtight buildings may offer greater protection against pollution.”  (my emphasis)

So far, we have three members of the GLA who have been supportive of our campaign, Keith Prince, our local Conservative GLA member, Sian Berry AM who stood for the Greens as a Mayoral Candidate in 2021 coming third and Hina Bokhari, a Liberal Democrat GLA member per a post in the blog dated 13th December 2022.

The views expressed in this newsletter are entirely my own and should not be taken to have the support of any of the three elected representatives above who supported the campaign visit to 10 Downing Street. (CONTINUES OVER)

Photo shoot on Sunday 15th January outside the Goodnayes Tesco Store at 4pm

The idea is to seek to persuade Tesco management to agree to site the school inside the development. If Tesco decide to do this, my understanding is we win the Judicial Review as a new planning application would be required. In order to persuade Tescos to agree to this request we will need more elected representatives, particularly Sam Tarry MP, to come on board as well as faith groups, local trade unions, and resident associations.

Making the photo shoot a success will be the main business of the meeting on  Monday 9th January 2023 at  8pm Methodist Church Hall, Percy Road IG3 8UA.

Regards

Andy Walker
