Draft letter to Sam Tarry from supporters

Draft letter to Sam Tarry MP below. The aim is to for parents, active faith members who a hold a position, trade unionists, political activists to sign the letter by 9am on Tuesday 1st February. The more who sign the more likely we will be able to meet Sam.

The High Court hearing takes place on 14th February (time is given the day before) If we can persuade Sam to support our Judicial Review concerning the filters at the school plus backing Ella's law it will be helpful to getting onto TV news and so put pressure on Tesco to intervene.

Dear Sam

Request you back Ella’s law and that you suggest an amendment

The stop the Tesco Toxic Towers campaign has a Judicial Review hearing for a full hearing on the 14th February. Tesco is part funding the proposed school at the development via a 106 agreement, but is refusing to site the school inside the development or even provide air filters for the school. This is despite the flats next to the proposed school being planned to have air filters to the seventh floor.

So we have the ridiculous situation that children are protected at home from air pollution, but when they walk to the school next door per the attached plan they will not have protection from air pollution using air filters!

Additionally, there is research suggesting that poor diet makes children more susceptible to the dangers of air pollution (1)

The block of flats facing the High Road in yellow per the plan is for affordable housing tenants. Where children maybe more at risk of a poor diet, making it all the more important that air filters be provided at the new school. Although, of course, it would be better to site the proposed school inside the development.

Caroline Lucas has a clean air bill going through parliament now. Sadiq Khan is reported to be backing the bill per the link here https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/air-pollution-toxic-sadiq-khan-london-ella-law-mps-ministers-b1053512.html in a Evening Standard article of 17th January 2023.

We are requesting to meet you along with others from the stop the Tesco Toxic Towers Campaign team to say why we seek your support for the Clean Air Bill.

Amendment to Ella’s law

National Institute of Clinical Guidance Quality Standard 181 suggests Councils do not allow schools to be built by busy roads. Building Bulletin 101 provides guidance on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools and instructs Councils to consider air filters to protect pupils when schools are built by busy roads.

At any meeting you may grant we would provide the evidence why flitters reduce exposure to air pollution.

The amendment requested is

“New schools to be built away from polluting roads when possible and any new school to be built next to a road causing pollution above World Health Organisation Limits to have an air filtration system”

The amendment is necessary due to Redbridge trying to defend their position at the High Court by trying to block BB 101 from the court bundle for the hearing on the 14th February 2023. If Redbridge Council win, it means Councils can grant permission to developers to build schools by busy polluting roads without air filters to protect children  from toxic pollutants.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Regards
