Request to intervene regarding the Tesco Toxic Towers Judicial Review

It is commendable that Tesco insists the farmers it does business with have the highest standards of animal welfare. Similarly, we request that Tesco have the highest standard of child protection from air pollution at the proposed primary school, which Tesco are part funding, at your Goodmayes development, labelled the “Tesco Toxic Towers” by campaigners.

It is welcome that air filters are proposed at the flats facing the High Road to the seventh floor. However, the proposed school, adjacent to the flats with air filters, has no filters at all. We would be grateful if you would consider a new application with the proposed school inside the development, or at the very least provide air filters for the school to protect children and staff from air pollution.

There is a Judicial Review concerning this development with a hearing seeking permission at court in the near future. Weston Homes, your developer partners, are opposing a document, Building Bulletin 101 concerning ventilation for new schools, going into the court bundle.

This appears wrong as this document is clearly designed to protect child health from air pollution: part of the text says:

“Air filtration is the most effective solution currently available to remove health damaging airborne pollutants and maintain clean indoor air for school buildings located in air pollution hotspots. Designers of ventilation systems for schools in areas of high pollution may therefore need to incorporate air filtration in such locations.”

We would ask you to consider whether Tesco wants to be associated with Weston Homes’ efforts to undermine a fair trial by seeking to block such a vital document.

Regards
