Briefing for MPs on Ella’s law ahead of vote on 24th February

I will be tweeting as many MPs in possible who have signed the early day motion ahead of the vote on the 24th February. Text is below

Dear MP

I note you are supporting Ella’s law on the 24th February. Currently local authorities can give planning permission for new schools to be built by busy polluting roads.

Redbridge Council has given permission for a school facing a polluting High Road so polluted by toxins caused by traffic that the flats adjacent to it have air pollution filters to the 7th floor.

The school is the main focus of a so far unsuccessful judicial review challenge. An appeal has been lodged in the court of appeal with a decision in around four months’ time.

Nice Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Quality Statement 181 recommends schools are not built by busy roads. The failure of Redbridge and I expect other councils to follow NICE guidance shows the need for Ella’s law to stop schools being built beside polluting roads.

In the Redbridge development, labelled the Tesco Toxic Towers by campaigners, the school could have been set inside the development, but the Council decided not to do this.

The Council is also refusing to provide air quality filters for the planned school.

Good luck with the vote on the 24th February.

Regards

Andy Walker
