Request for a new GP Facility for the Goodmayes Tesco Toxic Towers

Dear Tesco Store Manager,

We would be grateful if you could forward this letter to whoever is responsible at your Head Office.

We quote from a freedom of information request which contains a comment from the local NHS management about the impact of the Tesco development:

Despite acknowledging this high baseline pressure, the ES [Environmental Statement] does not propose any mitigation for primary care impacts. While it references anticipated planning obligations “to relevant social infrastructure,” no provision is made for health. Based on the proposed development of 1,379 homes, local patient numbers would rise considerably, increasing the average GP-to-patient ratio across local practices to approximately 1:4,211. This represents a clear and material worsening of access to health services.” (our emphasis) ENDS quote

The Royal College of General Practitioners report an English ratio of 1 GP to 2,247 patients at August 2025. (see rcgp.org.uk/representing-you/key-statistics-insights )

While we remain opposed to the development, we suggest that you amend your plans to include a GP Facility on the site to mitigate the damage it will do to health care for residents. Not only is there currently a shortage of GPs, locally both Queens and King George Hospitals are suffering from being too small to cope with the existing population. Both hospitals are struggling with corridor care and ITV news has recently compared Queens to a “war zone”. Children of a Queens' patient claimed that their father died on a Queens' corridor because a bed could not be found. The ITV report says:

The prime minister says shocking corridor care at an NHS hospital revealed by ITV News is "very concerning",

Time is pressing because the application target date given on the Council website is 9th January 2026 so we would be grateful by a reply by close of business on 19th December.
